We Answer Your Heating and AC Questions
Q1. Is there any advantage to running my heat pump fan all the time?
Yes, there are a few reasons to keep the fan setting in the “ON” position. Constant air filtering is one answer and another reason is to even out air temperatures between different areas in the home. The extra electric expense is not noticeable but the added comfort is!
Q2. The air coming from my floor and wall registers feel cold. Am I having a problem with my heat pump system?
No. A properly sized and installed heat pump is perfectly capable of heating the home to the desired thermostat setting. However, the temperature of the discharge air is between 90 and 95 degrees which is lower than a person’s body temperature and one could feel cool by the moving air. This air temperature is still 20 to 25 degrees warmer than the present home’s air temperature but a drafty feeling could be felt. It is very important to design a system with the proper number and placement of warm air supplies and cold air returns to limit this effect.
Q3. How often should I have my air ducts cleaned and inspected?
It really varies based on a number of factors. The quality of the air filter you are using to capture particulates from the air is one. Other considerations such as the number of pets in the home, age of the carpeting and other fabrics and what kind of cleaning solutions and aerosols are being used. The accepted industry answer is to have the duct system cleaned at least every three years. A full duct system cleaning may only be necessary every five to eight years or so.
Q4. How long will my furnace and air conditioner last?
On average, a home comfort system will last between 10 and 20 years depending on whether or not there has been regular on-going maintenance.
